View Full Version : crashed my jet, need some info
jdamet 04-15-2009, 01:27 AM I bought a P.O.S from banana hobby. It was way underpowered and on the 4th flight attempt it fell out of the sky and broke into 4 pieces. Now, I need to know If my 30 amp brushless ESC will work for an outrunner motor. The motor inthe jet is an inrunner. I have been told I need to upgrade to an out. But I cant get anyone on some other forums to answer this question. Maybe I am stupid for asking, but I dont know.
Also, does anyone have an EDF airframe they want to sell? I dont have alot of money to buy one new as most of them are $100 or more. It does not have to be perfect, just air worthy. I want to put another jet together because the brief flight of my mirage has me hooked on jets!
anyone have any valuable info?
Thanks
MerlinL14 04-15-2009, 03:55 AM As long as the ESC is designed for brushless motors then it is just fine for inrunner or outrunner

Thank you very much for answering that question!!!
bigric 04-15-2009, 06:59 PM No question is to big or small for this place. Never feel ashamed to ask. There is alot of knowledge in here.

Phastfred 04-16-2009, 02:18 AM Just check the amp draw of the proposed outrunner. you should not run a motor rated at more than 25 amps with your 30 amp esc to cover spikes. (or since your inrunner turns hish rpm's you might investigate a gearbox to gear down for a larger prop...).
jdamet 04-16-2009, 02:40 PM I am going to change my esc to a 50a, switch to a 4s-2200-20c li-po, and a UBEC, although I have no idea what a UBEC is, or which one I need. This is based on what a couple of other members have told me. They have alot of experiance in building EDF's.
I appreciate any and all info from everyone that is helping me out. Maybe someday I can pay it forward and help out someone just like you guys are now!
Thanks, John
acfttech 05-07-2009, 08:52 PM John, you mentioned that your EDF jet was way under powered. I have the solution to your problem I have a Hoffman Magnetics Mighty Mite in a VASA 65mm fan housing, driving a WEMOTEC 68mm fan unit that has been fitted & balanced. I customimized the fuselage to fit the EDF,it took some time but it was worth every minute. You'll have to upgrade your ESC & battery. The difference was night & day. I have crashed the Rafale (unrepairable) & have this sitting around collecting dust.Make me an offer.
acfttech 05-08-2009, 01:29 AM John, I have a few good Motors with very little time on them in fact all of these were never used in flight as I'm a stickler for Upgrading planes right out of the box.You can E-Mail at rvega@cox.net,rafael.h.vega@maf.nasa.gov, or call me at 504-610-1598. Best of Luck in your builds,ACFTTECH
Detroit Dave 05-08-2009, 02:39 AM Did you consider repairing the air frame you have now. If it's broken in four pieces, you should be able to repair ir with epoxy. I've repaired several foam planes that were pretty battered with 5 minute epoxy. They go together quite well and on mine, the seams where I put them together were barely visible.

jdamet 05-08-2009, 09:09 AM I have already repaired the airframe. I just need a canopy and nose cone. I had someone tell me that they use paper to get the desired shape of the cone, and then cover it with 5 min epoxy. I dont think my skills are good enough to do that. I cant find replacement ones anywhere on the net, so I have to wait untill someone offers them for sale on here.
The frame is almost finished with pain, but I need the other parts to get it 100%.
Thanks, John
acfttech 05-08-2009, 11:25 AM Mornin John, Here's another way to make a nose cone,Get yourself a sheet of plastic thin enough 5-10 thousands. Roll it to shape needed, tape & cut as needed. ACFTTECH
jdamet 05-08-2009, 12:19 PM I never thought about that. Great idea, thanks!
acfttech 05-08-2009, 12:41 PM No prob
acfttech 05-08-2009, 12:59 PM John, If your going to use a BEC you"ll have to understand what it doe's. Basically it eliminates the need for a reciever and servo battery pack. Depending on what kind of BEC your using some can be programed for a higher voltage output, like the Castle 10 amp. Read the instructions that came with the BEC.The wiring procedure should be followed to the 'T' or else it could damage your system beyond use.If ya need any more help just let us know.ACFTTECH
