View Full Version : something extra and os52 "what saY YOU" telepathicflyer 04-11-2002, 02:01 PM i think i need somthing extra i have an os 52 itchin for a job yay...nay...what you saY....EH ! K9GMJ 04-11-2002, 05:48 PM Should be a good match I would think, I just crashed my SE into a lake down here in FL and lost the engine, it was an OS91FSR and a little heavy but it flew the plane very nicely. I am getting another SE because I really like the way that they fly and I am thinking an Irvine 53 for it. I think water is as hard as concrete. jack01 04-11-2002, 06:05 PM It should be a good match. I've seen one with an OS 91 FS on it. It was too heavy for it, and waay to muc power. That 52 should be just right. _jon_ 04-11-2002, 07:25 PM Actually, this combo is great. The plane flies extremely smooth at 1/3 throttle. If you need unlimited power, just increase the throttle. I would suggest this power plant on this aircraft. Jon :) jack01 04-11-2002, 08:31 PM What about overspeed though? The one I saw was REALLY have foy a Somethin Extra, but if you've seen some that are fine, then I guess the guy that built this one just built too heavy. _jon_ 04-12-2002, 11:06 AM Well, I don't know about overspeed. I guess that depends on what you prop it with. I was just puttin' around at 1/3 throttle the whole time I flew it. I am sure they would come out heavy as compared to an SE with a smaller 2 or 4 stroke, just for the fact that you have to install some lead in the tail to counter the 2lb .91 hanging on the front. It flew very smooth, though, not at all like a brick, like you might expect. I aint no expert, far from it, but having flown an SE with this big powerplant on it, I might suspect the OS .52 fourstroke to be a little underpowered for this kit. I guess it depends on what you expect the SE to do for you. Jon :) havnfun 04-12-2002, 05:37 PM My SE flew great w/ .56 Saito (I almost went .72-the press about this combo was all positive because the Saito is so light) Since you have the power already, have at it. Two SE's at my field fly w/ .52 four stroke-one is OS, the other is Magnum, and they seem to perform fine. Neat thing about the Saito .72 is it is same case size as the .50, and it weighs out same as the .50, so if/when youre ready for more umph, you got a place to go without rebuilding the whole front end. Check it out, and good luck!!! Brian 04-12-2002, 07:51 PM It should be a perfect match! I'm flying my 4th SE right now with a Saito .56 which should be just about the same as your O.S. .52. The .52/.56 produces about 6 lb's of thrust and will hover the Somethin' Extra and pull it out of the hover. With some prop experimenting, you can get more thrust than that out of it...Vertical is no problem and any other manuever can be done! The engines are about 4 oz's lighter than a .46 two stroke and vertical performance is better and top end speed is slower. That's what you want on the SE! The airplane will very light, and you will notice it when you are flying. Nothing flies like an airplane that is light on the sticks! If you build it light, it should balance out just right with the 4 stroke. Fuel consumption is great and the landing gear is just right for a 12x6 prop. I am in love with the SE's and would not hesitate to buy a 5th...Let me know if you ever have any questions about it! Man K9, looks like a 10 minute fix job! I bet it looked cool though...Such a nice plane too!! Sorry! A .91 four stroke? I'd do that if I could find a way to put the rudder and elevator servos in the tail...In my opinion, that would still be heavy and useless... jack01 04-12-2002, 09:24 PM Brian, gotta love those Saitos! How slow can you land yours? I've got the Irvine 53 on mine, and it will land at walking speed. Brian 04-13-2002, 01:42 AM Jack, You can bring it down in a hover, so it's slower than a walking speed! Mine is right around 5.2 lb's. jack01 04-13-2002, 02:10 AM Man! Mine is under 4 lbs! That's a good flying plane to do the same stuff with such a wide range of weight! How does yours knife edge? I'm recovering mine, so I'm gonna make the rudder ALOT bigger. Brian 04-13-2002, 04:16 AM Jack, I know for a fact that your Somethin' Extra is NOT under 4 pounds! Better check that scale again... |
